rin appreciation post 🐎

just wanted to briefly admire rin as a character.

the art style & animation in fruits basket is gorgeous — but there's something extra special about rin's design. the velvety darkness of her eyes; the strong sweep of her slender body: the unending ebony spell of her hair. there's a very real majesty to her appearance that genuinely lends credence to her status as the horse of the zodiac. there's a certain animal magnetism to her that you can't help responding to; as a viewer. she tends to take over the screen in every scene she's in.

in terms of personality; rin is captivating and engagingly complex — vulnerable at heart & wounded; outwardly tough: and fiercely protective of haru and to some degree — even tohru in later episodes/chapters. rin's journey through undoing her feelings of inadequacy & abandonment due to her parents' neglect towards accepting that she is deserving of haru's love & care was heartening to see. the scene in which she falls sobbing into tohru's lap still has the capacity to move me to tears.

translating trauma into a kinder script for living is unimaginably difficult work — and there's a brash, bruising sort of intensity to the manner in which rin processes her experiences in this regard that manages to connect with the viewer/reader on a visceral level.
