Single rope recommendations, 2024
Looking for a single rope (50m) for up-and-over climbs or climbs where I know doubles aren't that beneficial (or paired with a tagline for a limited number of raps). Thinking somewhere around 9.0mm, because most 8.5 singles are a bit too skinny on alpine rock for my taste, especially when using just one.
Options I've seen:
- Petzl 9.0mm Volta Guide
- Beal 9.1mm Joker Unicore
- Edelrid 8.9 Swift 48
- Edelrid 8.9 Swift Protect
- Mammut 9.5 Core Protect
- Edelrid Canary 8.6mm (though thin, it has 47% sheath, which is cool?)
I like how both Edelrid 8.9mm ropes feel (thick/stiff, much more confidence inspiring on alpine rock). The Protect ropes are notoriously fuzzy, and my double versions of them haven't fared super well, so I'm not sure about the single rope version. Jury is still out on the Mammut rope's real life performance, though they obviously did some great and not so subtle marketing via Youtube...
