Cursed?! - Shield Item Usage

Is the only proper use of the shield the way shown in the below picture? Are there other ways to use the shield? My assumption is that it can only be used with the Explodes trait scenario below. At first I thought that if your last hit to a monster goes over, you can use the shield to prevent a bust for up to 3 damage over but now I think that is incorrect.
